Richard was born and raised in Leyland; an old town in the Northwest of England. With the Lake District and Snowdonia only a short distance away, the opportunities for enjoying the outdoors seemed limitless and by the time he was 15, Richard was an enthusiastic mountaineer.

Richard joined the Royal Air Force in 1983 and focused any spare time on mountaineering in Scotland and the European Alps. Despite taking a camera with him on most outings, it wasn't until a climbing expedition to Nepal in 1988 that he took a keen interest in photography.

In May 2000, Richard started to spend time in Canmore, Alberta. The surroundings of the Rockies and opportunities for traveling around the world rekindled his enthusiasm for photography. In 2002 he attended a workshop by the late Galen Rowell and a combined workshop by Charlie Cramer and Bill Atkinson. Richard became a full time professional photographer in August 2004.
