Born in Medicine Hat Alberta, grew up in Exshaw and Edmonton. Graduated as a registered nurse in 1950, Shirley married, raised three sons, worked in nursing and did art when she could. In 1979 she felt that a real artist , had to be able to draw faces and figures. She started sketching everywhere - at a nursery, in the park, at a jazz ballet class - and often after a shift at the hospital, she would stay and draw geriatric patients -- attention for them & models for her.

She joined an art club in Montreal and did life drawing 1 - 3 times weekly for several years. In 1986 she retired from nursing to paint full time. The paintings you see are a result of the continuing process.

Artist's Statement
I have found my subject matter (Landscapes, still life , flowers as well as portraits & figures) in Canada, the USA, Liberia and India as well as the Canadian Arctic. I work in various sizes (miniatures to 5 x 7 feet) and like to experiment with different mediums. I love to paint & I hope it shows ! |
