Workshops

“A Little Watercolour”

September 24th

Join Karin Huehold on Saturday, September 24th from 10 am to 4 pm for a fun, fast-paced workshop geared to beginner and experienced painters alike.

If you have never painted before, you will have loads of fun learning many watercolour techniques in a no-pressure setting. By painting on very small watercolour paper (2.5"x3.5") and working in a series, you can play and learn to your heart's content. If you have painted before, this class will help generate lots of ideas and inspire you to try things you hadn't tried before. Your finished works of art are suitable for framing or as a special gift card. The possibilities are endless! The day will end with a constructive critique. Class includes premium, pre-cut watercolour paper.

Karin Huehold was born and raised in Calgary. She has spent years studying calligraphy, decorative painting, assorted fibre arts, drawing, book binding, mixed media and most extensively, watercolour. Karin's favourite paintings involve the viewer by inviting them to imagine their way through the image. By manipulating water and pigment, interesting passages surface. To her this is what watercolour is all about. Karin has been involved in group shows and her work is exhibited in several galleries. To see more of Karin's work, please visit her website.

The cost is $35.00 for CAAG members, and $70.00 for non-members. This workshop will fill up quickly, so sign up as soon as possible. Registration will be opened to non-members on August 1st.

Collage Techniques

October 15th

Ursula Reynolds will conduct this one day workshop on Saturday, October 15th from 10 am to 4 pm.

This workshop is designed to help artists gain new insights into their creativity through the exploration of collage. A variety of techniques will be introduced and their implementation stressed so that participants leave with a working knowledge of the methods used in this workshop. Additional techniques such as colouring your own paper, creating special effects with tissue paper and collaging on canvas will be introduced if time permits. Some of the new materials needed in order to make participation easier will be supplied. Come prepared for a day of learning, sharing and enjoyment.

Ursula Reynolds' artistic development began at an early age but she didn't become a full-time practicing artist until the early 1990's. In 1997, she created River Rock Studio on property bordering the Ghost River in the Alberta Foothills, where artists can immerse themselves in the natural world and take part in workshops or retreats. Her paintings represent a lifetime spent connected to nature while recent works have drawn heavily on her childhood spent growing up in post World War Two Germany. Ursula's enthusiasm for teaching and art creates a vibrant, stimulating and non-threatening environment for the exploration of one's creativity. Her work is found in several galleries.

The cost is $35.00 for CAAG members, and $70.00 for non-members. This will be a fun workshop, so sign up soon to avoid disappointment as we have room for only 12 participants! Registration will be opened to non-members on September 1st.

Doug Swinton Workshop

November 5th and 6th

We can call it “simplifying your thoughts” how to simplify what you want to say. I will show you how to choose a good photo to paint from and how to simplify your ideas so it's an easy paint. - from choosing the best photo to simple design techniques - composition and easy colour thoughts that will stimulate the viewer. We will ask participants to bring in a stack of photos and I will help them to sort through and select a better picture to work from. I will show them some Photoshop techniques and how to paint on a photo to simplify ideas down. I will do at least one demo painting. Of course, we will paint each day as well as on Sunday, we will have a critique of paintings that participants are working on at home or are having problems with.

Doug Swinton: “I never really intended to make art a career it just keeps happening. Maybe its living in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and being surrounded the spectacular landscape. Maybe it's that my mom was always in the kitchen painting wicker baskets of bright fruit with Chianti wine bottles, or may it was all the doodles and drawings that adorned each and every page of my math book. but some how, art has now become my career.

Since my childhood, drawing and painting have always played an important role in my life. A big part of me never really left kindergarten. I still live for the ‘Hey Mom, look what I made!’ I think exhibiting in galleries is just a bit of an extension of that. And today, besides being an artist, I co-own Swinton's Art Supply and Instruction, an art school where, for over 16 years, my staff and I have taught the wonders of ‘Hey Mom!’ to inspired new artists of all age. Operating Alberta's largest privately owned art facility has taught me more about art than I thought imaginable.

How do you describe my art? That's like trying to hit a moving target. Just when I think its going one direction the ever elusive leopard slips away and changes its spots. Slathering thick viscid paint on a freshly unwrapped canvas is sensual and venereal. For me it's always been more about the doing than the end product. It's like being at a live concert. The energy that comes from the doing is a highly powerful thing. I also get bored very easy so I tend to flit from subject to subject. As J R Tolkien said, ‘not all that wander are lost’. No matter what the subject, it's alwa ys the same, the most amount of information with the least amount of brushstrokes.

Canada couldn't be a better place to live. But for me as an artist, the close proximity of the prairies, foothills and mountains of Alberta makes my home province a never-ending dream. I've been lucky and have painted in many countries, but to me there is still nothing more beautiful than a cold beer and a hot Calgary summer sunset.”

Doug Swinton's workshops and classes fill up very quickly. The cost to CAAG members is $35.00 PER DAY and $70.00 PER DAY for non-members. Registration will be opened to non-members on October 1st. Supply list and venue directions will be sent out upon receipt of cheque.
