CAAG extends its heartfelt sympathies to life members Elaine and Lauchie Fleming on the recent loss of their son Randy, who passed away due to heart problems.
Randy owned and operated The Corner Gallery for many years in Canmore.
At an early age, Randy was very active in hockey and football, and in a final kind gesture, he will be providing further research to the Brain Injury Research Institute in West Virginia.
At Randy's request no service will be held.
Please click on the Workshops page for information about newly scheduled workshops with Doug Swinton and Donna Jo Massie.
Due to a late cancellation, the time slot from September 9th through September 20th will become a very special group show entitled “These are a Few of My Favourite Things”.
The concept of this theme is to share with others, artwork that you have in your home which makes your life special. It may be a piece from a family artist, a poem you wrote in public school, a precious gift from a loved one, your child's best painting in kindergarten, or a piece of art you have collected. We want to make this an exciting and dynamic show which will captivate the visitors to the gallery.
We encourage you to write a brief story about the piece or why it is important to you. These will be mounted and placed beside your artwork. Title cards should include the name of the artist but, if you wish anonymity, you do not have to include your name as the owner of the work.
Although gallery security is very good, members are reminded that CAAG does NOT provide insurance coverage on any art displayed in the gallery.
If you have a small item you want in the locked display case, let Myrle and Anne know that as well. Space will be assigned on a first come, first served basis, so get your information in early.
Since this is only an eleven day show, there will be fewer sitter slots than usual. The more participants there are, the less sitting each will have to do.
Drop off of artwork will be Tuesday, September 6th from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.
The opening reception will be Friday, September 9th from 7:30 to 9:30 pm.
CAAG member Patti Dyment will be part of a two woman show entitled “Spring Creek Muse” at the Edge Gallery.
The opening reception will be on Saturday, August 27th from 2 to 5 pm. The exhibition and sale continues through September 20th.
The Edge Gallery is located at 612 Spring Creek Drive in Canmore.
On Tuesday, August 9th CAAG took part in the sod-turning ceremony for the new Canmore Multiplex, which is due to open in the fall of 2012. Members of the executive were joined by founding and life member Donna Jo Massie.
This group exhibition will run from August 19th through September 6th.
Visitors to the gallery will be encouraged to vote for their favourite piece in the show. The winner will receive fame and recognition.
“Your Executive has been working extremely hard on your behalf over the last week and, through collaborative effort, a lot has been accomplished. A timeline will be issued soon of future CAAG activities and the plans for two more workshops have been firmed up. Doug Swinton will be giving a painting workshop in November, and Donna Jo Massie will put on an advanced watercolour workshop in January. Watch the CAAG website for details.
In the meantime, we want to express our thanks to all of you who have offered us your support, and also to the volunteers who continue to work tirelessly to put on the events which make CAAG so special. We are also extremely pleased that a number of members have stepped forward to assist with organizing upcoming activities, and we have already started to have meetings with them.
We encourage you to consider how you can get more involved, whether it means taking on an Executive role, organizing a single event, or becoming part of a committee. Let us know how CAAG can benefit from your contribution, big or small.
August 19th is the opening date for the next group exhibition and we hope you are working on some new pieces to enter. Although the deadline for submission details isn't until August 12th, we encourage you to submit your label information as soon as you are prepared, as that will help the Gallery Directors plan the show. One new thing will be instituted at this show - a People's Choice Award.
The next General Meeting will be held on Monday, September 26th. At that time, we look forward to hearing your ideas on what you'd like as part of your CAAG experience. So put on your thinking cap and, every time an idea pops into your head, jot it down so that you can share these at the September meeting.
This is YOUR guild and your input is needed. We are excited about the future of CAAG and hope you will be too.”
The remaining Executive has released the following statement to the members:
“An Executive Meeting of CAAG was held on Wednesday, July 20th. Unfortunately, the President, Dea Fischer, felt there were irreconcilable differences in a number of areas with the rest of the Executive present and tendered her resignation. Dea has indicated that she plans to pursue her own creative pursuits at this point in time. She has made many great contributions to CAAG over the years and we wish her every success in her endeavours and thank her for all her hard work.
This created a domino effect with the resulting resignations of Patti Dyment as Vice President, Norma Stimpson as Secretary, and Toni Owen as Gallery Director. Our thanks also go to them for their contributions to CAAG.
The remaining Board members are committed to the successful management of CAAG, supporting membership through shows, workshops and socials. The next General Meeting of CAAG will take place in September and at that time we expect to be able to present an outline of our proposed plans for the year.
CAAG members are the heart of the Guild. We ask not only for your support but look forward to hearing from you as to what you would like to see as the future of CAAG. We intend to have open and honest communication with the membership, will work toward reflecting your needs and desires, and will report back on any questions raised.”
Dea Fischer will be leaving the Guild entirely, and has asked to pass along her parting statement:
“Dear Member:
It is with great regret that I announce my resignation from my role as your President, and from the Guild. I have wrestled greatly with my own values in making this decision, as I am and have always been deeply committed to the Guild's work and future. I wish you very great success with that future and look forward to seeing you around.
Sincerely,
Dea Fischer”
